Michael E. Smith Middle School in South Hadley kicked-off the new school year with an anti-bullying assembly for its students.
It was a way for students to learn about self-confidence and the need to take care of others. Casey McQuillen, an American Idol contestant from Season 13, was a guest speaker.
Casey uses her music to engage with young kids on the importance of treating everyone with respect. The event was meant to be a fun way to start the school year while recognizing issues that affect many kids.
“We’re trying to establish a positive culture here,” Principal Doug Papond explained. “She has the ‘You Matter Tour’… What better way to keep that momentum going for keeping a positive culture here than by bringing Casey McQuillen here? It’s a perfect fit.”
At the end of the assembly, students were able to get their picture with Casey, as well as ask questions.
The school does a #PositiveSign Thursday’s, to help keep a positive attitude at the school.
