Barbara Bush is a member of the Class of 1947 at Smith College. But she never graduated; she dropped out after her freshman year in 1944 to marry her current husband, George H.W. Bush.
They got engaged right before he left to fight in World War II as a Navy pilot. After he returned on leave, she dropped out of Smith College, and the two married in January 1945.
Mrs. Bush, who is now 93-years-old, has recently been in declining health and decided to end medical treatment for a life-threatening illness.
Many at Smith College are wishing her the best.
“We were very sad a sorry to hear the news,” Media Relations Director Stacey Schmeiodel told 22News. “There has been a lot of attention for it on social media within the Smith channels, and I think she has always been a woman of strength.”
She has stayed in touch with the college, she has contributed class notes to the alumni magazine, and received an honorary degree in September 1989.
