Belchertown police receive grant to purchase car seats for families in need

BELCHERTOWN, Mass. (WWLP) - Belchertown police were awarded a grant that will boost safety for kids in cars.

The grant money was used to purchase 48 child safety seats. Police will distribute them to residents who can't afford to purchase one.

The State's Public Safety and Security office awarded $170,000 to 65 local police and fire departments, non-profits and hospitals.

Belchertown was one of those police departments. They received 48 child safety and booster seats, totaling more than $2,600.

The town is one of the state's 225 car seat inspection sites. Belchertown police told 22News safety is their biggest concern.

"If we stop to report a vehicle of a child that was not in a car seat, we would have an officer bring a seat down to that car stop and assist the parent with the car seat," said Lt. Kevin Pacunas of the Belchertown Police Department.

Not having a child properly restrained in a car seat could cost you a $25 ticket. It's considered a seat belt violation.

Belchertown police conduct car seat inspections by appointment to make sure yours is properly installed.

On August 7, the Belchertown Police Department will have a free community night, where they'll go over car seat safety, and distribute car seats for families in need.
