Bicyclists concerned about distracted drivers when crossing the street

Hampshire County

HATFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – There have been some recent concerns about drivers not paying attention to bicyclists while crossing the road.

More bicyclists have been out the past couple of weeks because the weather has been getting warmer and drivers should be aware of that.

Some bicyclists have been concerned about drivers not paying attention when they want to cross the roads on designated bike paths.

The bike path crossing at Damon Road in Northampton has many signs to let drivers and bicyclists know about possible crossings.

One man said, in his experience, he’s seen drivers following the rules of the road.

“They basically follow the rules,” said Louis Spiro of Hatfield. “People stop and let you go when you are in the crosswalk. We stop and make sure the car is going to stop and most of the time they do.”

Drivers and bicyclists should obey traffic signs, signals and lane markings to prevent any incident.

Here in Massachusetts, by law, those 16 years or younger need to wear a helmet.
