Big Y is donating thousands of turkeys to food banks across the Commonwealth.
The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts received a significant donation that will help make sure families are fed during the holiday season.
Big Y and The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts are putting food on the table for families in need during the holidays.
Big Y is donating 7,000 turkeys to food banks across the state.
“Well there’s a lot of families in need in our communities,” said Sam Chevalier, director at Big Y in Northampton. “We have a very good relationship with our food banks and there are a lot of people in need our communities and our job is to not only take care of our customers but take care of the community.”
The 7,000 turkeys are the extra birds ordered for Thanksgiving. Big Y is donating turkeys to food banks in Connecticut, Worcester, Boston, and in western Massachusetts.
The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts received more than 16,500 pounds of turkey.
About 223,000 people in all four counties across western Massachusetts rely on the services of The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts during the holiday season.
“It’s our mission to serve our neighbors in need, and we try every day to make sure that we’re providing healthy food,” said Chris Wojcik at The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts. “With support from organizations and businesses like Big Y it goes a long way during this time of year and throughout the rest of the year.”
These food banks represent more than 2,100 food pantries, churches, and other community organizations who will be giving these turkeys directly to those in need.
Wojcik told 22News that the holidays and summer season are the two busiest times of year for The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts.
