Girls are now allowed to join Cub Scouts.
Becoming a Cub is the first step on the way to attaining the Boy Scouts’ highest honor of Eagle Scout.
The Boy Scouts said the moves reflect the changing nature of American life, adding to the appeal of a scouting program that can serve the entire family.
The Metacomet District, which serves communities in Hampshire and Franklin Counties, has 40 girls in its Cub Scout program.
District Executive of the Metacomet District, Lesley Bark spoke with 22News about the new changes to the scouting program. “We know as our world changes and as our families grow we need to accommodate for them so this really helps our families be able to have scouting for their boys and girls in a centralized location.”
Earlier this year, the National Organization for Women urged the Boy Scouts to allow girls to entire the program.
The Metacomet District says they plan on seeing more girls sign up later this year.
