Flag raised outside Amherst Town Hall in honor of Black History Month

Hampshire County

February is Black History Month and people are celebrating across western Massachusetts.

For the fifth year, a flag raising ceremony was held outside of Amherst Town Hall Sunday afternoon.

Dozens came out to honor the accomplishments of black Americans throughout history, including some from Massachusetts.

The group sang “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” which is often referred to as the black national anthem.

Amherst town council President Lynn Griesemer told 22News, “I think it’s very important as we begin our era as a new town council to celebrate these moments, to recognize the diversity across our town.”

Black History Month has been celebrated since 1976.
