Free sand to prevent slips and falls on ice

Hampshire County

In Huntington, seniors can get a bucket of sand delivered to their house by the Hampshire Sheriff’s Office.

The bucket of sand is filled up at the Huntington Highway Department. Then, loaded into a car and taken right to the front door of the person who needs it.

Deputy David Fenton of the Sheriff’s Office told 22News they have delivered more than 21,000 pounds of sand to seniors throughout Hampshire County.

“Each bucket is about 50 pounds of sand. Our goal is to avoid injuries, slipping on ice to go out and get the paper, or go out to get the mail or take the dog outside. If we can keep someone in their home longer, it’s a lot better for them.” Deputy David Fenton

Slip and falls can be really dangerous for elderly people.  Each year, at least 300,000 older people are hospitalized for hip fractures from a fall.

If you are interested in having sand delivered to your home in Huntington, the Sheriff’s Office will be doing another round of deliveries next week, on February 21.

To receive a bucket of sand contact the Huntington Council on Aging at 413-512-5205 or Huntington Town Hall at 413-512-5200.
