Granby students to attend one elementary school

Currently, elementary grades are split between two schools

GRANBY, Mass. (WWLP) – The town of Granby is investing in education.

"You got to have good school in order to have good community," said Andrea Kennedy. Her daughter, Kelly Lynne, is a 4th grader at East Meadow Elementary School in Granby.

Residents voted by a more than 2 to 1 margin to pay more in taxes for a new elementary school to be built at East Meadow. "People complain about taxes, they always will, but a school is a huge part of the community, and it's connected to your property tax," Kennedy told 22News.

Right now, the two elementary schools, East Meadow and West Street both need repairs. With 34.2 million dollars, the district is building an addition onto East Meadow to house Kindergarten through second grade. East Meadow will be renovated for 3rd through 6th grade. There will be a glass hallway connecting the two buildings. The state will reimburse 17.5 million of that cost through the Massachusetts School Building Authority.

The town of Granby will determine what will become of the West Street School once all faculty, staff and students move to East Meadow. As for the principal's position there, it was already eliminated last year to save money in the budget. For the past year, East Meadow Principal William Lataille has been principal of both schools.

This comes at a time the district is noticing more students attending surrounding community schools instead of those in Granby. "Enrollment is key to our success in Granby. We are hoping to remind families that we are the best choice for Granby students and also reinvigorate our school choice in students," said Granby Schools Superintendent Sheryl Stanton.

In addition to new classrooms, there will be a new gym, media center and safe school entrance with a new student drop off area.

The combined East Meadow Elementary School will serve about 430 students when it opens in fall of 2018.
