Grant allows Northampton Police to buy car seats for families in need

Hampshire County

The Northampton Police will be able to buy car seats for some families in need thanks to a grant they received recently.

According to Northampton Police Captain John Cartledge, Northampton was one of 58 police and fire departments, non-profit agencies, and hospitals in Massachusetts to receive the Child Passenger Safety Grant.

“This grant helps us better serve families who find it difficult to afford car and booster seats to protect their children,” said Capt. Cartledge. “We can also assist parents and caregivers with the proper installation of their child’s seats.”

The Northampton Police Department is one of more than 235 car seat inspection sites in the state. The department also has certified technicians on hand to make sure the seats are installed correctly.

“People shouldn’t be installing these things on their own,” said Capt. Cartledge. “There is a way to install them properly and our officers have been trained on how to do that. This grant makes sure everyone is safe.”

The service is available to any resident of Northampton. State agencies have awarded more than $190,000 to 58 local police and fire departments, non-profit agencies, and hospitals.

You can schedule an appointment for inspection, or for new seat installation by emailing Officer Jeff Staples at or Officer Ken Kirchner at
