It was the first day jitters for one South Hadley student.
“I’m kind of nervous,” said sixth grader Damon Wood. “I’m hoping I can make some friends.”
Kids went back to school on Tuesday, but because of the heat, they had an early dismissal. Parents said it was a smart decision.
“It’s fine with me given the heat,” said South Hadley parent Edward Pietryzykowski.
Students told 22News that the high school only has air conditioning in some parts of the building, while Plains Elementary School has air conditioning throughout.
Damon, who is starting middle school today, said he doesn’t mind the heat, and actually wishes he had a full first day of school.
“I’m sad that I missed my gym class,” said Damon.
His brother Devon said once school gets out, he’s heading right for the air conditioning.
“Going to go home and probably do some chores,” said Devon.
Springfield and Chicopee Public Schools also made the decision to release students early on Tuesday because of the high heat and humidity.
