A creative ice cream competition was held at a local university Wednesday night.

Six teams made up of UMass Amherst Food Science students had their newly developed ice cream flavors judged by a panel of culinary professionals.

The 5th annual Food Science Ice Cream Competition was held in the Integrative Learning Center and serves as the students’ capstone project.

One teacher assistant told 22News, “It’s always a lot of fun. I have a lot of fun as a TA because I just get to eat the ice cream the whole semester while they make it. It’s fun to see it get better and I just love the audience reaction and the fan favorite is always fun to see who wins,” said Cassie Suther.

This year’s flavors included chai, churro cheesecake and blueberry lemon bar among others.

The winning flavor will be produced by Maple Valley Creamery in Hadley next year and sold in local markets with a UMass Amherst logo on every pint.
