Increase in bear sightings in western Massachusetts

Hampshire County

Residents are reporting bear sightings in several towns here in western Massachusetts.

A viewer sent 22News video of a bear ripping off the bird feeder in their backyard in South Hadley. Another viewer sent in video of a bear and her cubs in their backyard in Ludlow.

Holly Johough of Easthampton told 22News they’ve taken steps to avoid attracting bears, but they still come searching for food.

“We’re like oh my gosh, this is kind of scary because my nephew lives in my house and he’s only five. Cause they get about 20 feet from my house. Put away the bird feeders and we have a locked box that we actually keep them in,” said Johough.

According to MassWildlife, securing your trash, taking down bird feeders, and making sure to feed your pets inside can all help avoid attracting bears.
