EASTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – The Easthampton Fire Department received multiple 911 calls Sunday morning regarding a fire on Mechanic Street at Ed’s Auto Body and Repair.

The Easthampton fire chief, Chris Norris said that when they arrived, there was an active fire and assistance was requested. When fire crews arrived, they could see the flames coming from both bay doors. The fire was right off Union Street near the Manhan Rail Trial. Mechanic street was closed, and police shut down Liberty Street as they also work to contain a water main break there.

At one point, the electrical service lines fell on the nearest hydrant, making that hydrant unusable for a portion of the fire.

Members of CERT, or the Easthampton Community Response Team, stood along the Manhan Rail Trail to maintain a safe perimeter.

22News crews were there during the fire and fire officials told them the fire was happening on an active gas line. Norris said there were challenges controlling the fire and getting gas lines to the building shut off.

“Eversource is on scene and they were able to shut off the gas to the facility at this time crews are trying to complete the overhaul and checking for extensions of the building and then we will begin the investigation process after that,” said Norris.

The Easthampton Fire Department said the gas line fed the fire and helped the spread through the building.
