BELCHERTOWN, Mass. (WWLP) – A Ware man was outraged Tuesday morning when he realized there was no American flag flying outside the Belchertown courthouse.
Marine veteran Gary Aiken was in court Tuesday morning when he noticed there were no flags on the poles outside the Eastern Hampshire District Court. Aiken said he had a frustrating conversation with court officers inside.
A courthouse worker who asked not to be identified told 22News they do typically fly the flag every day, but were short staffed Tuesday. They said the court officer’s job comes first, and they have a responsibility inside.
“I’m a Marine. It hurts me,” said Aiken. “It hurts me to know that these people don’t have enough respect for our country to take, what does it take? Two minutes to raise a flag before you open the door?”
We were told the flag will likely to be back up outside the courthouse Wednesday.
