Man found dead after car fire in Northampton

Hampshire County

A man was found dead inside a car off Burts Pit Road Friday morning, and now an investigation into that death is underway.

Mary Carey, spokesperson for the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, told 22News that there was a small fire inside the passenger compartment of the car, and as a result, the Northampton Fire Department and the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services were called in. That is in addition to investigators from the Northampton Police and state troopers assigned to the DA’s office.

The incident happened at the dog park, not far from the Northampton Community Garden. Stunned pet owners were turned away, as police searched for evidence.

The DA’s office said there was a small fire inside the car. Carey told 22News after the body was discovered, that it is not suspected that the man had been the victim of a crime, and there is no threat to public safety.

Investigators are still looking into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death, and an official cause will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
