Amherst Police rescued a man who fell through ice on Puffers Pond Monday night.
Amherst Fire Chief Tim Nelson told 22News a man riding a bicycle heard the cries for help around 7 p.m. and called 911. Chief Nelson said the victim was up to his shoulders above 12-feet of water.
He was about 50 feet from the shore and couldn’t climb onto the ice.
Police officers tossed him a rescue rope and pulled him in.
Chief Nelson told 22News the victim was alert and talking, but they bundled him up and brought him to the hospital as a precaution.
“Lucky he didn’t go under,” Chief Nelson said. “Great job by police.”
Chief Nelson added that it’s too late in the season to trust the ice, so just don’t take the chance.
