Man taking sanctuary at Amherst church offering Spanish lessons

Hampshire County

Lucio Perez has been living at First Congregational Church in Amherst since October. And now we’ve learned that he’s teaching Spanish there.

Perez’ Spanish lessons focus on conversation for beginner and intermediate levels, in groups or in individual sessions.

All classes are being held at the First Congregational Church at 165 Main Street, which is providing sanctuary for Perez.

He is a father of four who has lived in the U.S. for 20 years without documents. He’s fighting to keep his family together and overcome a deportation order to go back to Guatemala.

Lucio Perez said he’s teaching classes to contribute and connect with the community and to get involved.
