A popular Northampton bistro is re-opening.
Mary’s Bistro is re-opening at the Northampton Senior Center after it closed back in April due to staffing changes. A soft opening was held Tuesday, to re-introduce the food service.
“I think it’s great,” Florence resident, Terry Carr said. “A lot of people don’t get a hot meal and I think it’s great for people to come down and I think once the word gets out there will be more people.”
With the help of volunteers and a new chef, the bistro will once again serve those who want an inexpensive hot meal. Inmates from the Hampshire County Correctional Jail are coming back to once again lend a hand.
“I’ve been meeting with the jail to talk about their curriculum and how our site might be an addition to their curriculum and advance the skills that inmates are learning so they are more job-ready when they are graduating,” Northampton Senior Center Director, Mary Westburg said.
Chef Kevin Martin, who is new to the bistro, will teach the inmates the cooking skills they might need once they are out, and looking for a job in the culinary field.
“To work with them and further improve their skills so they can get into the field when they are out is really helpful,” Martin said.
There will be a grand opening, with city officials sometime in the coming weeks.
