MassDOT planning interim repairs on I-91 bridge in Northampton

Hampshire County

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – There are concerns about the safety of the I-91 bridge that goes over Route 5, also known as Mt. Tom Road.

Drivers say the bridge looks very dangerous and unsafe. MassDOT workers were seen working on the I-91 bridge Southbound Tuesday.

Patrick Marvin from MassDOT told 22News that the bridge is currently open to traffic and is safe for travel.

MassDOT is currently planning interim repairs over the next several months to ensure the continued reliability of the bridge.

Marvin said there is a future bridge replacement project that’s currently being designed and is scheduled to be advertised for construction bids in 2020.

In 2016, MassDOT had labeled the bridge “structurally deficient.”

The bridge is safe to drive and more repairs are expected to be made in the coming years.
