New England Dermatology creates new protocol after improper patient records disposal

Hampshire County

New England Dermatology, P.C., d/b/a New England Dermatology and Laser Center (“NEDLC”), is reporting that paper records containing health information of patients who were seen at their Northampton office during a period from approximately June 10, 2013 to May 23, 2018 were discarded without first being shredded.

NEDLC self-reported the lapse in appropriate waste disposal to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, as is required. They have also instituted a new waste disposal protocol, including training to employees and contractors.

According to Steve Ieraci, Executive Director of NEDLC, the records would not have had social security numbers or financial information, but names, addresses and health information in regard to patients visits to the facility.

NEDLC has notified affected patients by mail. If any patients who were seen at the Northampton office between June 10, 2013 and May 23, 2018 did not receive a letter they should call (800) 338-8891 or email for more information.
