New Mass Aggie Seed Library open at UMass

Hampshire County

AMHERST, Mass (WWLP) – The New Mass Aggie Seed Library opened for the first time Thursday afternoon at UMass Amherst.

The open house was from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the school’s Science and Engineering Library.

The library is for seed borrowing and seed donation and their collection focuses on organic, open-pollinated, and heirloom seeds.

“People go to the card catalog and they check out seeds like they check out a book and they take the seeds and grow the seed and we hope they will save the seed to return it to the library,” said Paulina Borrego, a UMass Science and Engineering Librarian.

It also has a collection of books to educate the community about seed saving. In addition, the library will soon provide seed-saving tools that people can loan to encourage and support seed saving efforts.

The library is open to the campus and the local community.
