Just Healthy LLC wants to build a 174,000 square foot medical marijuana growing facility on Ryan Road in the Florence section of Northampton.
Just Healthy Co-Founder Neil Phelan said the project has a lot of support in Northampton.
“The leadership that Northampton has demonstrated both in the Cannabis industry and the voters overwhelmingly voted in favor for this,” said Phelan.
This property was the former site of a gravel pit owned by Eric Willard. Inc. Just Healthy LLC said their medical marijuana growing facility would employ 40 people and they would ship their products to their dispensary in downtown Northampton.
The city’s Zoning Board of appeals approved Just Healthy’s medical marijuana facility last Thursday. Now they need a permit from the Conservation Commission.
“Am I happy about it? Yes. The traffic will be a big decrease, the quality of life is there and they are very willing to be part of our family in Ward 6 and work with everybody,” said Marianne LaBarge, Northampton City Councilor.
Phelan told 22News their solar-powered facility would be able to operate using 40 percent less power than other cultivation sites. He said they are only licensed to produce medical marijuana and not recreational, so far.
The Cannabis Control Commission is expected to approve the state’s first independent testing lab for recreational marijuana at its next meeting August 23.
