No plastic bags rule in South Hadley to go into effect July

Hampshire County

Starting next month, shoppers in South Hadley will no longer be able to use plastic bags.

After town meeting voters approved a single-use plastic bag ban last year, the new ordinance is set to go into effect on July 1. Several shops in the Village Commons in South Hadley told 22News they switched to paper bags years ago, and one South Hadley resident said she lived in another town with a bag ban, but the transition wasn’t difficult.

“In general, I mean I started when I use to live in Northampton, and they started their practice a while back,” Janice Mazzallo of South Hadley. “So I think in general people are trying to recycle wherever they can.”

Under the new ordinance, businesses not following the single-use plastic bag ban will be fined $100 by the Board of Health for a first offense, and $200 for a second offense.
