The I-91 North in Northampton near Exit 20 will be closed Thursday and Friday morning.
According to MassDOT Spokesman Patrick Marvin, the on-ramp will be inaccessible to all vehicles from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. both days.
Marvin said the closure will allow construction crews and contractors to work safely and effectively.
Vehicles wanting to get on I-91 North will be re-routed to continue on Route 5 northbound and use the Exit 21 on-ramp. Marvin said there will be signs and messages to alert and direct drivers.
Drivers are encouraged to be mindful of potential traffic, to reduce speed, and to drive with caution when traveling through the area.
“The folks can travel a little ways up Route 5 and there is another entrance, northern entrance to 91, right up the road,” said Rich Webber of Webber and Grinnell Insurance.
On Thursday afternoon, cars continued up Routes 5 and 10 to get on I-91 North at interchange 21. The on-ramp reopened to traffic before the evening rush.
Be advised, the on-ramp will be closed, and the detour will be in effect again Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. so crews can continue working on the on-ramp.
Marvin said the work is dependent on the weather and is subject to change without notice.
