Northampton police receive grant to purchase car seats for needy families

Hampshire County

The Northampton Police Department has recently been awarded a grant that will be used to purchase car booster seats.

The department is one of more than 225 car seat inspection sites in Massachusetts, with certified technicians available to ensure children’s seats are installed properly.

Anyone in need of a car seat or a booster seat will be able to pick one up at the station free of charge. Captain John Cateledge said this grant will help serve families who find it difficult to afford car and booster seats to protect their children.

Mark Patillo, who has two kids, told us it’s a great idea to have the local police department help its residents. “I think its really great for the community just because, one, the importance of protecting the children but also, the Northampton Police Department will always help you install your safety seats.”

Nationwide, traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for children of all ages. Properly installed car and booster seats have been proven to reduce the risk of death and injury in crashes.

You can schedule an appointment to pick up a car seat by calling the Northampton Police Department.
