Northampton residents enroll in Citizen Police Academy

Hampshire County

Northampton residents are getting an inside look at what takes to be a police officer in the city.

The Northampton Police Department kicked off their eight-week Citizen Police Academy Thursday night.

Nineteen Northampton residents enrolled in the program, taking an in-depth look into patrol procedures, narcotics investigations, and traffic stops.

Sergeant Patrick Moody told 22News the academy has more participants this year, and it’s a great way to get a better understanding of what their officers do.

“I’ve had people come up to me after the class and say wow, we thought you just drove around in cars all day and stopped people that were speeding,” Moody said of past participants. “And really this gives you a behind the scenes look at what we do, our interactions with people, how we apply our knowledge and skills here to what we do in the community.”

The academy runs through the end of March when participants will have the opportunity to take a ride-along with an officer.
