Northampton residents look for answers after mysterious message appears on yard signs

Hampshire County

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Northampton residents are looking for answers after a disturbing message appeared on several yard signs last week.

Vernon Street residents say someone vandalized several multi-colored signs in the neighborhood that read “No matter where you are from, we’re glad you’re our neighbor,” written in Spanish, English and Arabic.

Someone had taped over the signs with a piece of paper, with the words “Please don’t murder us.”

Now residents want to know, who did it, and why.

“It’s funny that it’s such a cryptic message and it could be seen as a neutral prank and one friend said maybe it’s not even negative, but I think it’s pretty clear that it’s targeting the people who think immigration should be more open,” Barton Byg said.

Northampton police have been notified of the incident and are currently investigating. Some neighbors though are worried, because they say this is usually a friendly and quiet area.

“Northampton in general is a pretty welcoming community and to think it could happen in our neighborhood is a bit disheartening,” resident Candy Carlisle said.

The Vernon Street community wants to get the word out that they won’t rest until they know who is behind the message.

“This is probably a pretty minor incident, but the problem is, these minor incidents are happening every single day,” Byg said.

Many neighbors told 22News that more of those welcoming signs have been put up in recent days to show support for the community.
