Northampton residents puzzled after body found inside car on fire near dog park

Hampshire County

Police are investigating a body found in a car near the Northampton dog park.

Northwestern District Attorney’s spokeswoman Mary Carey told 22News there was a fire in the car found off Burts Pit Road Friday morning. As a result, the State Fire Marshal’s office was called in.

Northampton Police and State Police detectives assigned to the District Attorney’s office are investigating.

Carey said they don’t believe the man was a victim of a crime and there is no threat to the public.

The news surprised people who walk their dogs in the normally quiet area, near the Northampton community gardens.

“It’s kind of something that makes me think of a CSI episode or something, a car on fire,” Dominique Kalata of Easthampton told 22News. “It’s nice to come out here, I generally feel pretty safe. You hear about this crazy stuff on the news, but generally not what I would expect here.”

The Medical Examiner will determine how the victim died.

The D.A. said there’s no threat to public safety.
