EASTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Two people are dead after they were struck by a car on Route 10 in Easthampton Tuesday night.
According to Northwestern District Attorney’s Office Spokesperson Laurie Loisel, at around 7:30 p.m. Easthampton and Massachusetts State Police were called to a single-vehicle crash near 113 Northampton St. involving two pedestrians.
The victims were both of Easthampton, an 81-year-old man, and his companion, a 60-year-old woman died after being struck and killed by a vehicle driven by a man from South Hadley. The driver is cooperating with police.
The cause of the accident is being investigated by Easthampton Police, State Police troopers from the Crime Scene Services Section (CSSS), the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section (CARS) and the Detective Unit attached to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office.
David Whiteley from Easthampton was saddened to hear what happened, but told 22News this road has gotten more dangerous.
“I’m not really surprised and I’m actually kind of surprised we haven’t had more because of all of the congestion that’s been developing over the last 20 years,” Whiteley said.
Linda Pezzini from Florence also uses Route 10 regularly.
She said even with her car, it’s difficult to cross because there’s traffic coming from both directions.
“There’s not a lot of time to get over to the other side when you have to cross over,” she said. “The Easthampton people, the City Council, please look into this because that’s a great tragedy.”
