Northwestern DA’s Office investigating bullying incident at Belchertown school

Hampshire County

Northwestern District Attorney’s Office Spokeswoman Mary Carey confirmed for 22News that an 18-year-old student was arraigned last week on a charge of assault and battery with serious bodily injury.

According to documents obtained by 22News, the incident took place in the third-floor boy’s bathroom of Belchertown High School.

As stated in those documents obtained at Eastern Hampshire District Court in Belchertown, a student knocked down another student and repeatedly punched him in the head. The victim, a minor, ended up with a broken jaw and a missing tooth.

District Court documents said the defendant, deemed too dangerous to release, was detained for four days without bail. He was released on January 22 with conditions.

Superintendent of Schools Karol Coffin told 22News they’re taking this situation “extremely seriously,” and are following procedures.

Coffin said neither student is in school at this time. They’ve asked parents to respect the privacy of the students involved.

The defendant is due back in court on March 6.
