Pedestrian safety improvements completed around Southampton’s William E. Norris School

Hampshire County

MassDOT has completed multiple pedestrian access and safety improvements around the William E. Norris School in Southampton.

Improvement’s include a ten-foot wide sidewalk along College Highway and a five-foot wide sidewalk along Helen Drive and Lynn Drive adjacent to the William E. Norris School.

Improvement’s also include new pavement markings and safety signs.

“We have some students who walk and bike each day to school, so by widening the sidewalk, it allows bikes to move back and forth,” said Kevin Cousineau, William E. Norris assistant principal. “It really encourages exercise for families who would want to walk and bike to school each day.”

The improvements were made possible by MassDOT’s Safe Routes to School Program.

Cousineau said that an about 50 kids at Norris Elementary walk or bike to school on a daily basis.
