Police reminding drivers to stay awake at the wheel after recent accident

Hampshire County

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – A recent car crash has police reminding drivers to stay awake behind the wheel.

A front porch on King Street in Northampton was damaged after a driver fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into it.

According to Northampton Police Chief Jody Kasper,  officers were called to the area of 120 King Street around 10:30 Tuesday night, where a car had crashed into the front porch of a building.

No one was injured, but there was damage to the porch and the car. The damage was cleaned up by the time 22News got to the area Wednesday morning.

Kasper said the driver told police he had fallen asleep at the wheel.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that drowsy driving was responsible for 72,000 crashes in 2013.

Yawning or blinking a lot, missing your exit, drifting from your lane or difficulty remembering the past few miles driven.

Police say, if you are tired, you should wait to drive until you feel ready.
