Police warning drivers to look out for deer on the road

Hampshire County

Northampton Police are reminding drivers to keep an eye out for deer.

They posted a message on the department’s Facebook page alerting drivers that three deer have been hit by cars in the last week in Florence.

The Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife said drivers should not swerve to avoid hitting a deer, because it could ultimately result in a far more serious crash, and put you and others at greater risk.

Kurt Southwick of Florence told 22News, “Usually I see them coming so far enough in advance I have enough time to slow down and take precautions. You just see them from time to time. It’s nothing out of the ordinary for me.”

For less than $10, drivers can attach an “auditory deterrent” to their car. Auditory deterrents are commonly known as deer whistles.
