Resident concerned about need for repairs on Norwotuck Rail Trail

Hampshire County

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – A man from Hadley says repairs need to be made to a local rail trail.

Andy Morris-Friedman uses the Norwotuck Rail Trail frequently and he’s noticed some areas that need some work.

He said sections of the trail around the Lawrence Swamp have been undermined by beavers, and it’s causing some large holes in the asphalt.

Morris-Friedman said he’s contacted the Department of Conservation and Recreation, but told him they have no budget to make these repairs.

“If you can stop the problem before the asphalt collapses, you could just shove some material in there and it’s a temporary fix,” Morris-Friedman said. “Of course, the animals just come back and burrow under it again so there needs to be more of a long term solution.”

Morris-Friedman said he hopes the repairs will be made before the warmer weather is here to stay so that there are no dangerous areas for bikers and pedestrians.

The Norwotuck Rail Trail travels from Belchertown to Florence.
