Residents receiving fraudulent phone calls regarding an IRS scheme

Hampshire County

Residents of western Massachusetts have been receiving fraudulent phone calls regarding an IRS scheme.

Residents have been receiving calls from callers who are pretending to be the IRS and saying their is a warrant for their arrest if payments aren’t made.

Western Massachusetts residents have been saying the calls have been coming from area codes outside of the state of Massachusetts.

One Northampton resident said he’s been receiving calls from other agencies as well.

“It was from a 413-320 number which is from a cell phone, and they called me and I know it’s not the Red Cross, because the Red Cross is a 1-800 number,” said Eddie Collette.

According to the IRS website, they will not call to demand immediate payment.

The IRS will first mail a notice to any taxpayer who owes taxes.

To report a scam the IRS is encouraging you to call 800-366-4484.
