Search suspended for missing swimmer in North Amherst

Hampshire County

Firefighters and police officers from multiple towns were involved in an hours-long search for a body in an Amherst pond early Friday afternoon.

Crews were called to Puffers Pond just before 2 p.m., searching for a missing swimmer, presumed to have drowned.

Dive teams from State Police, South Hadley, Sunderland and Northfield assisted the Amherst Fire Department in a several hour search of Puffers Pond in North Amherst.

“We received numerous calls from people that were at Puffers Pond at the time that they had seen somebody go underwater,” said Captain Jennifer Gundersen of the Amherst Police Department.

Police turned back UMass students who told 22News Puffers Pond is a popular swimming spot for students in hot weather.

“We tried to go to the entrance and there were two police cars but we didn’t really know what was going on,” said Ann Lee of Amherst. “We Tried to go this way, then the police, nicely told us the beach was closed. Definitely unsettling.”

UMass police were at Puffers Pond, but Captain Gundersen said they were assisting, and the identity of the swimmer has not been released.
