Smith College has made some changes after an incident on campus last summer.
An African-American Smith College student complained after a campus security officer asked her what she was doing sitting in a common room on an early afternoon.
The student believes she was reported because of her race.
After reviewing policies and procedures, Smith College told 22News they’re implementing changes to strengthen its commitment to inclusion, diversity, and equity.
“It’s definitely an issue they need to be proactive about,” said Andrew Woolridge of Northampton. “The fact that things like this are still happening today is concerning.”
Changes include online anti-bias training for college employees and a conference that will take place in April.
In addition, campus police officers will undergo training every year on preventing profiling.
