Thursday was Veterans Appreciation Day at the South Hadley Senior Center. It was an opportunity for the community to honor the 45 invited guests who had served their country in the military.
Vietnam veterans said they are thankful for the respect they now receive, due in part to the warm welcome given to returning soldiers from Iraq and Desert Storm. But the disrespect these men first encountered still hurts.
“It did happen when we came back,” Vietnam veteran Ed Houlberg told 22News. “They put us on buses, it was out of the way. When I went back to college, they didn’t want us to be in the same dorms with the other students.”
More than a hundred people came out to show their support for local veterans.
