South Hadley Select Board appoints Amherst police captain as new police chief

Hampshire County

South Hadley appointed their new chief of police Tuesday evening.

The town Select Board unanimously accepted the appointment of Captain Jennifer Gundersen of the Amherst Police Department to be the new South Hadley Police Chief in their meeting Tuesday night.

Gundersen was chosen after an extensive search that included 27 candidates.

She has 24 years of policing experience and a masters in public policy and criminal justice. She said she believes outreach is an important part of policing and listed some of the issues that are a priority.

“Many communities are dealing with the opiate problem right now, so I’d certainly want to understand where South Hadley is at with being able to combat that problem, I’d also like to see how we’re serving our senior citizen community, a very vulnerable population,” said Gundersen.

January 4 will be Gundersen’s first day as chief of police.
