South Hadley water main replacement project underway on Route 116

Hampshire County

Work has begun on a major water main replacement project in South Hadley.

Traffic will be down to one lane on Route 116 in South Hadley for several months while crews install the new water main.

The heavy machinery got to work on the water main replacement project between Lamb Street and Camden Street on Route 116. South Hadley Water Department Superintendent Jeff Cyr told 22News the existing water main is old and deteriorating and has to be replaced.

The replacement work is taking place right down the street from Gerry’s Music Shop.

“The water mains have been so old, and they have been deterioating over the years,” said Jim Provosot Owner, Gerry’s Music Shop. “It was a great opportunity to upgrade the system and ensure things move foward.

The South Hadley Water Department acquired a $2 million interest-free loan from the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority to pay for the entire project. So it won’t impact property taxes in South Hadley.

The water main replacement project started on Monday and will take about three months to complete.
