NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Northampton Police and Massachusetts Environmental Police responded to a call that there was a bear in a tree on Gothic St. in Northampton.

The bear climbed up into the tree, garnering the attention of on-lookers.

According to Northampton Police, they had to use a tranquilizer dart to get the bear out of the tree after it showed no signs of leaving. The video from 22News viewer Brittany Manville shows many people watching as the bear falls from the tree.

The bear was ok but according to experts, when bears find themselves in more urban areas they can be disoriented and it’s important to know what to do if you encounter one, especially because this time of year because bears are most active during early morning and late evening hours in spring and summer.

Critter Control Jonathan Cahoon told 22News, “The advice that’s typically given is to make a lot of noise, make your presence known because it’s more dangerous to surprise an animal. So the population is growing and they’re just in search of new territory new food sources, they tend to raid people’s garbage.”

According to police, the bear was relocated to an undisclosed location.
