The two people who were found dead inside a home on Village Hill Road in Northampton Thursday morning have been identified.
According to Northwestern District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Mary Carey identified the two people as 24-year-old Karina Nieves and 26-year-old Nelson Cardona.
Carey said the official causes of death will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, but both appear to have died from gunshot wounds.
Preliminary indications from the investigation suggest Cardona likely shot Nieves, and then himself, said Carey.
Northampton residents say this residential complex is not known as a place where bad things happen.
“It’s a lot of elderly who live there and a lot of kids who come and take care of them so it’s an odd spot for that to happen,” said Daniel Mihalak of Northampton. “I have a lot of elderly near where I live so you would never expect something like that to happen.”
Cardona and Nieves had been in a long-term relationship and had three children together, all of whom are safe and being cared for, said Carey.
Northampton Police and State Police detectives with the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office are still investigating this incident.
