UMass fraternity suspended for hazing, supplying alcohol to minor

Hampshire County

A UMass Amherst has been suspended after breaking the student code of conduct.

The Theta Mu Chapter of the Pi Kappa Alpha pleaded not guilty Monday to charges of hazing and serving alcohol to a minor.

The incident happened in November 2017, that led to a student being hospitalized for alcohol poisoning.

The fraternity has been suspended by UMass Amherst under the student code of conduct and has also been suspended by its parent organization.

“I feel it’s a shame that in 2018 we have to still deal with things like hazing and alcohol poisoning,” said Morgan Holmes, UMass freshman. “I feel like we are at a point in time that we can be more adult about these things.”

The next court date will be a pre-trial hearing scheduled for late January.
