A discussion of the future of public education was held Wednesday night at UMass Amherst.
Former U.S. Secretary of Education John King’s presentation focused on the challenges inner city youth deal with in the public school system. King considers himself living proof of the power of a great education.
King told 22News that although Massachusetts has made great improvements there’s still work to be done. “In many places, low-income students and students of color are not getting access to quality teachers, to well-rounded curriculum, advanced coursework, school counselors. We have to do better.”
King said the first step in improving the public school system is investing in the preparation, development, support and compensation of our teachers.
