The Westhampton Planning Board has issued a special permit allowing the construction of solar farm in town.
The permit would allow CVE North America to build an $8 million, 5 megawatt, solar plant on land off Montague Road and North Road.
“I’m rather pleased they did away with the coal plant now they’re going to do the solar panels and electric energy so I’m thinking it’s a great idea economically and ecology wise, it’s perfect,” said Billy Lynch, a solar farm supporter.
Under the permit, CVE North America would be limited to clearing vegetation only necessary for operating the solar facility.
The approval also requires a chain link fence to be put up around the solar farm.
Construction on the new solar energy plant could start in Westhampton as early as this spring.
