With summer well under way, the Coast Guard is reminding boaters to be as safe as possible on the Connecticut River.
The Coast Guard’s encouraging boaters to prepare, perform maintenance, and keep safety equipment on board.
R&D Marine in West Springfield said the Coast Guard and local law enforcement agencies will come out and check your boat to make sure you have all of the required safety equipment.
There should be a life vest for every person on your boat, but certain types provide more protection than others.
R&D Marine owner Russ DeMarco told 22News, “For children especially, you want to get something that’s at least like this, this has a little bit of a pillow behind the head. If they fall in the water, it’s designed to put their face up, and keep their face out of the water.”
Some of the more comfortable types of life vests, like a type-three vest, don’t provide the level of flotation other bulkier vests do.
