Pet safety during Halloween celebrations

Local News

Keeping your pets safe during Halloween doesn’t have to be tricky. The ASPCA has some recommended precautions pet owners can take to keep your pet healthy.

Chocolate can be very dangerous for dogs and cats. It contains a sugar substitute that can be toxic for animals, so make sure you keep the candy bowl where your pet can’t get it.

Zach Baskin, from West Suffield, Connecticut told 22News he has to be aware of this around his own dog. “I know he looks small, but this little guy has a big appetite. It’s real important that we keep our chocolate especially up high in the cabinets. Don’t want him getting into it or else we’ll have a sick pup. Don’t want to have to take a late night trip to the vet.”

The ASPCA also recommends you not put your pet in a costume unless you’re positive they love it. If they don’t like it, it can stress them out.

Costumes can also pose as a choking hazard if there are dangling or easily chewed-off pieces.
