AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) – Agawam police along with Massachusetts State Police are investigating after a body was found in School Street Park Monday morning.

Hampden District Attorney Spokesperson James Leydon told 22News a body was discovered early Monday morning in the parking lot of the park. The cause of the death is still being investigated by police and the District Attorney’s office.

22News spoke to residents who live nearby the area and they said they’ve never witnessed any strange activity in or around the park.

“I am a bit surprised,” said Melissa Gorneault. “I do live on River Road and we come here often. I’m a little skeptical leaving the kids alone. I have older ones as well. I’m just gonna really closely monitor at least over the next couple of weeks to see how things kind of roll out.”

“It’s usually peaceful,” Spencer Beaver added. “It’s very surprising that they found a body. I wouldn’t expect any violence in the park.”

Agawam Police nor the District Attorney’s Office have released any information regarding the person’s identity or why they were in the park.

22News is following this incident and will provide additional information as soon as it is released.
