Montague residents are concerned about the condition of the Canalside Trail Rail Bridge.
The bridge goes over the Connecticut River, connecting the towns of Montague and Deerfield. It’s part of the Canalside Rail Trail bike route that extends for more than 3.5 miles.
The bridge is the sixth oldest metal truss bridge in Masachusetts.
Jazmyn Brewington of Montague said, “What happens if someone is riding across it one day with their family and all of a sudden a big hole or something. Its dangerous. I would like to see it fixed so I can feel safe on it.”
Montague Town Administrator Steve Ellis told 22News the Canalside Rail Trail Bridge is owned by the Department of Conservation and Recreation, so its their responsibility to maintain the structure.
The DCR said the bridge is safe to use, but they are planinng to make short-term and long-term repairs to the bridge.
